Since the foundation of team Phidippides in 2007 we are building Europe’s most durable vehicle.
Team Phidippides was founded in 2007. Since then, team after team of inspired students of Rotterdam University of Applied Science have contributed to building Europe’s most durable vehicle.
Currently, the team consists of 29 enthusiastic students who want to explore beyond their regular education and take on this exciting challenge. By participating in the Shell Eco-marathon 2016, the students will broaden their vision, not only in the Automotive discipline, but in other disciplines as well. Think of project management, communication and fund raising.
The students have to apply for a position in the team before they can join the team. Because of the strict admission, the team consists of highly motivated students from multiple bachelor programmes from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. At this moment the teams consists of students of Automotive Engineering as well as Electrical Engineering and Industrial Product Design.

What is the Shell Eco-marathon?
The Shell Eco-marathon is a unique competition that challenges students around the world to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car. In this competition only one thing really matters: to cope with the fuel consumption as economical as possible.
Every year 230 student teams build at least one vehicle and they battle for the best result.
This year, the Marathon will take place in Londen near the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from the 30th of June till the 2th of July. The circuit is 2240 meters long and every team must complete 8 laps within 43 minutes. The team who has the least fuel consumption wins!
Teams can compete in different classes. Team Phidippides has got two teams, team Triga II and team Quadriga II, which participate in the Prototype class and the Urban Concept class. In the Prototype class it is all about the best fuel efficiency, which means that there are no practical requirements for the vehicles that participate in this class. This way the students have the full freedom to develop a vehicle that is incredibly efficient. The vehicles in the Urban Concept class are really close to reality. They look more like regular cars and must be equipped with rear- and headlights, a horn and windshield wipers.
Last years’ winner in Shell Eco marathon 2015 in Ahoy Rotterdam achieved an amazing score of 1 in 10.000 km.

Did you know that in 2016 the 31st edition of the Shell Eco-marathon will be held in London? Phidippides will compete for the 9th time.
Did you know that in 2011 Phidippides put down the best score in the Prototype class in the Benelux? And that in 2012 it marked the best score in the Urban Concept class in the Benelux?
Did you know that the goal for this year for the Triga II is 1:1800 is and 1:1000 for the Quadriga II?

Did you know that our vehicle can drive 566 km on the energy that you get from a bottle (0,5L) of water?
Did you know that since 2015 Team Phidippides also took students Electrical Engineering and Industrial Product Design on board for better results?
Each year, we create and innovate because we want to contribute and be part of a more sustainable future. We want to show this by creating two innovative vehicles and by achieving the best possible results at the Shell Eco-marathon.
